Wheel of Life

Wheel of Life is a really excellent tool to help us notice if our lives are in balance, to consider what areas are important to us, and consider how we choose to focus our choices to reach our own ideal balance.

First, create a Wheel a bit like this:

For now use 8 sections as shown and label each section with one area of your life. For example, you could choose

  1. Friends & family

  2. Money

  3. Career

  4. Home environment

  5. Health & fitness

  6. Fun & leisure

  7. Personal growth

  8. Significant other

if any of the categories feel like they don’t fit for you, this is your tool so change the headings, or re-categorise them - you can add more or reduce the number of categories too - but if you're new to it, this is a good place to start

Using the Wheel

  • on a scale of 0-7, where 0 is completely missing, & 7 is completely satisfying, rate each aspect of your life with a number

  • draw a line across the sector at the place to represent the number you picked (examples below)

  • when you finish, have a look at the whole wheel... does it represent how you feel about your life at the moment?

  • is there anything that feels off?

  • is that because the categories need adjusting?

  • or could it be because your ratings need adjusting?

  • make the amends 💫

when you're happy that it feels true, now think about how you'd love it to be...

  • which areas are as full as you'd like, which aren't?

  • which areas are maybe too full?

  • which areas do you enjoy working on?

  • are they the same as the ones you'd like to work on? or are there areas that you'd like to be fixed by a magic wand?

  • notice everything you can notice from this Wheel of Life - it can be useful to journal on this, or make audio notes, however you prefer to process your thoughts because getting them out of your head can avoid rumination, allowing space for your subconscious to start working on how you'd prefer things to be 💫

EXAMPLES

this illustration shows some examples of part-completed wheels showing the 0-7 rating

including completed wheels demonstrating how it can appear when the sections are similar or more varied, one in which the sections are all very different and another in which while no section is excelling, they’re all at a very similar level - there is no right answer, but it’s useful to consider how you’d like the balance in your life to show up 💫

A Wheel of Life focusses on your whole life, which is incredibly useful to start your thinking

if you're currently considering career choices, you can do a new wheel that gets more granular on work,

Wheel of Work

categories could include:

  1. work satisfaction

  2. relationships

  3. training and development

  4. amount of change

  5. number of major tasks

  6. level of leadership

  7. purpose

  8. reward & recognition

Repeat the exercise for the new categories, and make a note to revisit in a few months, when more change has happened, what do you notice when you’re making choices with more awareness?
